A Winter Family Photography Session with a Family Photographer in Troy, Ohio

A Multi-Generational Family Photography Session in Troy, Ohio

This family session began months before we ever picked up a camera.

Back in November, one of the daughters reached out to book a session as a surprise Christmas gift for her parents. As a family photographer in Troy, Ohio, I often work with families who want to document meaningful seasons of life, and this one was especially special. With seven children, one married daughter, and a 7-month-old grandbaby, it had been a few years since their last professional family portraits.

By January, when our session date arrived, their family had grown in the most meaningful way.

Photographing a Large Family with a Troy, Ohio Family Photographer

Photographing a family with seven kids, plus a 7-month-old grandbaby, comes with a beautiful kind of energy. There’s history, inside jokes, familiar rhythms, and so much connection that you can feel it immediately.

This wasn’t about perfectly posed photos or everyone looking at the camera at the same time. It was about documenting who they are right now: parents watching their family grow, siblings settling into adulthood, and a brand-new generation being welcomed into the story.

The Lange Estate: A Favorite Location for Family Photography in Troy, Ohio

We met on January 10th, 2026, at the Transfiguration Center for Spiritual Renewal, also known locally as The Lange Estate, in Troy, Ohio. This was my first time photographing a session there since moving to the area, and it quickly became clear why it’s such a popular location.

The grounds are open to the public and include acres of wooded trails, river views, and beautifully maintained gardens and buildings. Even in winter, the space offers so much variety, quiet paths, open areas, and natural textures that photograph beautifully year-round.

There’s even a playground, which is always a bonus for families with young children and makes it easy to keep sessions relaxed and fun.

Winter Family Photos in Troy, Ohio (Even in Rainy Weather)

Leading up to the session, we stayed in close communication, keeping an eye on the forecast. January in Ohio is unpredictable, and this day brought cold temperatures, rain, and heavy clouds.

We debated rescheduling, adjusted the session time, and ultimately decided to move forward, shooting in between bouts of rain. And honestly? The weather worked in our favor.

Overcast skies gave us soft, even lighting with no harsh shadows. The grounds felt quiet and peaceful, and the session had a cozy, calm energy that matched the season perfectly. It was a great reminder that “less than perfect” conditions can still create meaningful, beautiful images.

Respecting Privacy in Family Photography

The parents of the littlest one requested that their baby’s face not be shared publicly, which is something I always respect and support. Every family has different comfort levels when it comes to privacy, and honoring those wishes is part of creating a safe, trusting experience.

Even with that boundary in place, we were able to capture images that tell the story of this moment in their lives and the joy of welcoming a new family member.

When I shared their sneak peek, I was able to include those moments while honoring their wishes, and it felt like the right balance of connection and respect.

Why Families Choose a Troy, Ohio Family Photographer for Meaningful Sessions

By the end of the session, everyone was cold, a little damp, and laughing. But we had done exactly what we set out to do: document a family exactly as they are right now.

Family photos don’t have to wait for perfect weather, perfect outfits, or the “right” time. Sometimes the most meaningful images come from showing up, adapting, and embracing the season you’re in, literally and figuratively.

This session was such a beautiful reminder of why I love photographing families: because these moments matter, even (and especially) when life feels busy, messy, or in-between.
