1. Hobart Nature Preserve
Best for: Golden sunsets, tall grasses, and a relaxed outdoor feel
If you love warm, glowing light and open natural spaces, Hobart Nature Preserve is one of my favorite locations in the area. During early and mid-fall, the tall grasses catch the evening sunlight beautifully, creating soft, timeless images.
This location is especially wonderful for:
- Families with young children who like to explore
- Families with older children and teens
- Multi-generational family sessions
- Families who prefer a more natural, open backdrop
Because of the open landscape, sunset sessions here are especially beautiful.
2. Duke Park
Best for: Classic fall colors and easy access
Duke Park is one of Troy’s most recognizable parks and offers a variety of colorful trees during the fall season. It’s an excellent option for families with little ones because everything is close together and easy to walk.
You’ll find:
- Vibrant fall foliage
- Open grassy areas
- Large mature trees
- Plenty of room for kids to move and play
This is a great choice if you’re looking for those classic autumn family portraits.
3. Charleston Falls Preserve
Best for: Wooded trails and adventurous families
If your family loves nature, Charleston Falls offers a completely different look.
The wooded trails create beautiful layers of color in October, and the natural scenery gives your images a peaceful, storybook feel.
This location is perfect for families who enjoy:
- Hiking
- Exploring together
- Older children
- Rich autumn colors
The waterfall can also add a unique touch to your session, although we don’t have to hike all the way to it if little legs are getting tired.
4. Transfiguration Center for Spiritual Renewal – The Lange Estate
Best for: Open fields, manicured gardens, and a quiet, elegant setting
This property offers beautiful open spaces with a peaceful atmosphere. The combination of grassy fields, manicured gardens, a charming house backdrop, and mature trees creates a timeless setting that photographs beautifully throughout the fall.
It’s especially lovely for:
- Large families
- Multi-generational sessions
- Families wanting a quiet location with fewer distractions
- Families who love a more refined garden or estate-style backdrop
Scheduling made easy for busy moms
One of the most common questions I receive is when the leaves are at their best.
While every year is a little different depending on the weather, southwest Ohio typically sees:
- Late September: Early hints of color
- Early October: Color begins to build
- Mid to late October: Peak fall foliage
- Early November: Remaining color with a softer, more neutral look
Because peak color only lasts for a short time, October sessions are usually the first to book.
Don’t worry!
Some of my favorite fall sessions happen before the trees reach peak color. Warm evening light, natural connection, and your family’s genuine moments matter far more than perfectly colorful leaves.
The “best” location isn’t always the one with the brightest leaves.
